Air-to-water and geothermal heat pumps.

Radiators, underfloor heating and hot water, from the air or the ground. Serviced and repaired by us.

How it works.

Air-to-water heat pumps heat the water in your heating system, the same job a boiler does.

How air-to-water works: an outdoor heat pump heats water for radiators, underfloor heating and a hot water cylinder1234
01

From outside air to hot water

The heat pump collects heat from the outside air and puts it into water for your heating and taps.

  1. 1Outdoor heat pump takes heat from the air
  2. 2Warm water flows into the house, usually 35 to 55°C
  3. 3Underfloor heating loop in the floor, radiators upstairs
  4. 4A hot water cylinder stores water for taps and showers

Good to knowIt works best when it runs low and steady, rather than blasting on and off like a boiler

Three types.

They all heat water. The difference is where the heat comes from and what runs between the units.

Monobloc heat pump: the whole refrigerant circuit is in the outdoor unit and water pipes run into the house123
01

Monobloc

Everything happens inside the outdoor unit. Only water pipes run into the house.

  1. 1Outdoor unit with a sealed refrigerant circuit
  2. 2Insulated water pipes, flow and return
  3. 3Cylinder and heating circuit indoors

Good to knowThe water pipes outside need frost protection, such as antifreeze valves or glycol

Split air-to-water heat pump: refrigerant pipes run to an indoor unit that heats the water1234
02

Split (refrigerant split)

Refrigerant runs from the outdoor unit to an indoor unit, which heats the water inside the house.

  1. 1Outdoor unit
  2. 2Refrigerant pipes through the wall
  3. 3Indoor hydro unit heats the water
  4. 4Cylinder and heating circuit

Good to knowNo water outside, so no frozen pipes. The refrigerant work needs an F-Gas certified engineer

Ground-source heat pump: a loop of pipe buried in the ground feeds a heat pump indoors that heats the home≈10°C123
03

Geothermal (ground source)

A loop of pipe buried in the garden, or down a borehole, collects heat from the ground for a heat pump indoors.

  1. 1Ground loop in trenches or a borehole
  2. 2Heat pump indoors
  3. 3Cylinder and heating circuit

Good to knowA metre or two down, the ground stays at roughly 10°C all year, so output barely drops in winter

Worth knowing.

Did you know?

Lower temperature, lower bills

Heat pumps are most efficient at low water temperatures. Underfloor heating or larger radiators get the most from them.

Did you know?

A yearly service pays

Clean filters, the right pressure and clean coils keep efficiency up and catch small faults before they become big ones.

Grants may help

SEAI grants may be available for heat pump systems. Check seai.ie for what applies to your home.
